Photographs of Bahay Nakpil-Bautista taken by Boldy Nakpil Tapales, a grandson of Gregoria de Jesus and Julio Nakpil.
Exemplifies the earthquake-resistant “bahay na bato at kahoy˝ or “house of stone and wood˝ wherein an upper storey made of wood is built over a stone foundation. This area was originally designed to house a stable and carriages as these were the mode of transport of the era. The “entresuelo˝ or mezzanine is where Julio Nakpil, Gregoria de Jesus and family once lived. From the top of the grand staircase one will note the bannisters in the same design theme that pervades the entire home. This is one of the large rooms with high ceilings and lower windows that slide open. The design provided good air flow in an age before air conditioning went mainstream. Commemorates the democratic revolutionary movement that pre-dates all others in Asia. The living room of Bahay Nakpil-Bautista forms part of the Bulwagan Ng Katipunan or Museum of the Katipunan wherein art depicting the Philippine revolutionary movement at the turn of the century is displayed. A portion of the museum is dedicated to the person who helped organize the womens’ chapter of the Katipunan. Three paintings depicting the life of Gregoria de Jesus and the precepts of the Katipunan. Contains features typical of the era such as the four-post bed with the “mosquitero” or mosquito net – a necessity in the marshy environment of Manila. Our terrace is an oasis of greenery overlooking the urban sprawl around it.
These are some amazing photographs. It feels good to be a part of this family. I’m into photography myself any tips, advise, photo comments would be more than welcome! thanks.
